The Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) - Overseeing each House is the Housemistress, who is a senior member of the academic staff, a deputy housemistress, a Housemother, who sees to the girls’ every-day needs, and student assistants who ensure that there is always an adult presence in the House.

Meals are taken in the communal dining hall.

Boarding can be a fulfilling experience. Attributes of tolerance, respect for and consideration of others are fostered as girls learn to live with others from different backgrounds, cultures and races. Girls develop a strong sense of community and commitment to each other and deep, lasting friendships are formed.

Eighty per cent of the girls are boarders who are accommodated in four Houses. Gone are the days of long, draughty, uninviting dormitories – the Houses are comfortable and have a congenial home-from-home atmosphere with WiFi access and televisions.

The Diocesan School for Girls (DSG), one of the oldest girls’ schools in South Africa, values its tradition of excellence but also recognises the need to be at the cutting edge of educational trends.

Many of the traditional stereotypes have disappeared and women in the twenty-first century have choices and options available to them that no other generation has had.

At The Diocesan School for Girls (DSG), we welcome the increasing influence of women in society and recognise that the modern school needs to prepare girls for the role they can play. Our aim is to develop girls who are forward thinking, transformative in their world-view and critical, independent problem-solvers; young women who can make sound ethical judgements with a keen sense of their social responsibilities. At the end of her school career, a DSG girl will be a strong, confident woman – a woman who will be adaptable in coping with a rapidly changing world; who is prepared to be a leader and to play a meaningful role – in short, a woman of substance.

A boarding school provides education for pupils who live on the premises, as opposed to a day school. The word “boarding” is used in the sense of “room and board” i.e., lodging and meals. As they have existed for many centuries, and now extend across many countries, their function and ethos varies greatly.

Fewer Distractions. Boarding school students can focus better on their studies because television, video games, phones and other distractors are limited. These young scholars usually perform better academically because they live in an environment that is conducive to learning.
