Boarding Facilities
Union High School offers three scenically positioned boarding houses, which is home to 40% of our pupils. Arthur Kingwill House accommodates the boys from Grade 5 - 12 and Herby Arnott House is home to the girls of the same grades. The Grade 1 -4 boys and girls are accommodated in Max Kroon House, a unique home from home, for about 30 children.

Arthur Kingwill House
Arthur Kingwill House, situated against a magnificent mountain backdrop, is home to 120 boys, from Grade 5 to Grade 12, as weekly or termly boarders.

The hostel is divided into a Junior and Senior section each with their own dedicated matron. They have separate prep facilities, sleeping quarters and bathroom facilities with a joint dining hall, where nutritious meals are served. A TV/games/ common room is also available. The boys are cared for by a resident superintendent , matrons and duty masters, who all live on the premises, with a healthy ratio of 1 adult to every 15 boys. A sick bay and strictly-controlled dispensary is available.

A mentor system has been introduced with each grade having a dedicated duty master to guide and mentor the learners. Supervised prep, under the guidance of duty masters and prefects, is held every evening.

The boys have easy access to all the school sport facilities as well as their own tennis courts, cricket nets and enormous front and back lawns for recreation, including a braai area.
Pastoral care plays an important role in the hostel with various types of worship activities held on a daily basis, as well as fun-filled evenings playing touch-rugby on our manicured lawns.

A boarding school provides education for pupils who live on the premises, as opposed to a day school. The word “boarding” is used in the sense of “room and board” i.e., lodging and meals. As they have existed for many centuries, and now extend across many countries, their function and ethos varies greatly.

Fewer Distractions. Boarding school students can focus better on their studies because television, video games, phones and other distractors are limited. These young scholars usually perform better academically because they live in an environment that is conducive to learning.
