Potchefstroom High School for Boys - Barnard House is the official hostel for the day boys of College. The day boys are as part of the day to day activities at the school as the boarding students. The Senior Housemaster is Mrs Tanja de Vos, a Life Science teacher at Potchefstroom Boys’ High.
Buxton House has its origins in boarders that stayed in private dwellings in town as the existing two hostels couldn’t accommodate all the applicants. The House was named after Lord Buxton, the Governor-General of the Union of South Africa from 1918 to 1928. The hostel was built in 1937 and occupied in 1938. Buxton’s colour is green, because the house was so far away from the rest of the school that it developed a rustic and independently rural aura. Heraldically green represents youth, joy and beauty and is associated with spring. The insignia adopted for Buxton was the laurel wreath, symbolising victory. With extensions and additions over the years, Buxton is now, along with Milton bigger than Granton, which has become the smallest House. The Senior Housemaster is Mr Oregopotse Rametsi, a professional rugby referee.
Granton House. This hostel was built in 1909. It was named after the home town of the first Headmaster, Mr C D Hope. He came from Scotland to teach in South Africa. The hostel was occupied by the first group of boarders at the start of the third term of 1909. For the house colour, Hope adopted the dark blue of his university, Oxford. He also became the first housemaster of Granton. He was assisted by Sammy Tyers and B F Woods. In a play on the name of Charles Hope, the biblical symbol of hope, a rainbow, was selected as the Granton insignia. Through the years the hostel was extended and now a 103 boys can be accommodated. Granton is the smallest of the three boarding houses. The Senior Mousemaster is Mr Alex Paiva, the sport coordinator at College.
Milton house was founded as the second hostel by the end of 1909 and was occupied just a few months after Granton, the first hostel. The first housemaster was Philip Milton Druce, one of the teachers at College. He was assisted by Messrs F N Gammidge and A E Matthews. As a graduate of Cambridge University, Druce adopted the light blue of that institution as the colour of Milton. Mr Hope was again acknowledged by the adoption of a fouled anchor as its insignia – a nautical symbol of hope, appropriate for the sea-blue of Cambridge. The hostel was also extended throughout the years and the hostel is now larger than Granton. The Senior Housemaster is Mr Francois Wiid, a mathematic literacy teacher at Potchefstroom Boys’ High.
Potchefstroom High School for Boys is a traditional boarding school set on spacious grounds in Potchefstroom. Established in 1906, 'College' is a unique school which allows its rich heritage, traditions and rules to integrate seamlessly with the needs of modern day teenage boys.
Its culture has largely been shaped by the boys themselves. Boys High's influence on its learner family extends far beyond just the immediate school environment, nurturing them for a changing Africa and a modern world.
The educators employed at Boys’ High are highly qualified and motivated to assist boys in all spheres of education. Students are encouraged to make the language their everyday tool of communication, in order to prepare them for the demands of both tertiary education and a working world in which English is the international language of choice.
Our wide range of subject choices enables flexibility for the learners and an opportunity to explore new areas of study. International studies have clearly shown the benefits of single-gender schools, especially for boys and our seasoned and innovative educators are constantly aware of the need for gender-specific approaches to classroom management and lesson presentation.
Apart from their teaching, many of them are also involved in the hostels where they look after the boys, supervise prep (homework) sessions as well as chaperone boys to school and sporting events. These dedicated housemasters are also available at all times to assist boys with personal problems.

A boarding school provides education for pupils who live on the premises, as opposed to a day school. The word “boarding” is used in the sense of “room and board” i.e., lodging and meals. As they have existed for many centuries, and now extend across many countries, their function and ethos varies greatly.
Fewer Distractions. Boarding school students can focus better on their studies because television, video games, phones and other distractors are limited. These young scholars usually perform better academically because they live in an environment that is conducive to learning.
